Dr. Anderson - HUM 102

Pathfinder Research Assignment

Creating a Pathfinder: A Guide

Pathfinder Description:

This is not a research paper! Dr. Anderson is a professional researcher, and she is interested in finding out what kinds of information you can discover about your Humanities topic.

What you will create is a list of the books, articles, and other sources of information that experts have written on your topic. You will comment (in your own words) on the "aboutness" and usefulness of the sources that you discover as well as descriptions of how you discovered these sources.

Books - Use the Library Catalog to search for books.

How to get there: (1) Library Homepage (2) Click on Find Books

  • Use the Library Online Catalog to find books in Pearsall Library. You may "Quick Limit" searches to limit your search results to Ebooks, the Reference Collection, etc...
  • Discover books around the world using WorldCat, then order them through InterLibrary Loan.

Articles - Use article databases to find articles that have been published in popular magazines & scholarly (academic) journals.

How to get there: (1) Library Homepage (2) Click on Find Articles (3) Select databases by subject

◊ Your first impulse may be to find articles that discuss the "humanities person" you have chosen for this project. However, you may want to use the library's research databases to instead find information about a movement that they inspired, a concept that they developed and that researchers are still studying and publishing articles about, etc...

  • Remember, research articles tend to focus on the cutting edge, rather than historic information.

TIP 1: You must let Dr. Anderson know which of your 3 articles is from a peer-reviewed journal. What's the difference between scholarly and non-scholarly journals and articles? Articles: Scholarly vs. Popular

Tip 2: The library's research databases are accessible by students from off-campus. Learn how to authenticate via EZ Proxy.

Internet Source:

Google, Yahoo, Ask.com, Wikipedia, Dogpile, etc...you know the drill. Here is where you can find breaking news. News sources are very brief coverage of events that have happened very recently.

Most professors only accept sources from reliable websites. But which websites are reliable? Use the checklist below to help you decide if a website is reliable or not.
