ENG 112                                       Dr. Grattan

A couple cartoons after the United States' involvement with the  "Cuban Missile Crisis" of 1952.

General goals:

  • Research the historical context of the cartoon to understand its meaning. Do this by finding high-quality information at the library.
  • The information you find will inform the "historical summary" portion of your essay as well as your understanding and analysis of the cartoon itself.
  • The library session today will direct you to high-quality print and/or electronic information.
  • A quick word about Wikipedia and Googling info on the web and How to Judge Web Info

Books - AN EXCELLENT place to start. Books often contain older, established information on topics that have been studied for years, decades, eons. Use books to learn basic information. Only move on to articles after you have a good foundation of knowledge on a topic.

Use the Library Catalog to search for books - A basic example

How to get there: (1) Library Homepage (2) Click on the "Find Books" link

  • Use the Library Online Catalog to find books in Pearsall Library. You may "Quick Limit" searches to limit your search results to Ebooks, the Reference Collection, etc...
  • Discover books around the world using WorldCat, then order them through InterLibrary Loan.

Articles - Articles tend to contain information that is very current rather than historic information. For example, if your topic is on the Cuban Missile Crisis, you'll find basic, historical information about it in BOOKS. You'll find that articles will contain specific and current information about the Cuban Missile Crisis. This happened way back in the 1950's...what are people still discussing today? Find out in articles.

How to get there: (1) Library Homepage (2) Click on Find Articles (3) Select databases by subject
