Plenty of progress was made
during the first part of October as the building
really took shape.

signified progress as the full dimensions of the
building were now in view.

SEPTEMBER 8, 2008
In early September, the building
began to look like a building as the frame started going up.

as the cement base for the floor was added.

The final stages of carpet
replacement left us quite displaced indeed!
JULY 2008 |

Meanwhile, our once-unused garden
area was torn down to make way for a new, usable
plaza near the entryway.

Barnhill construction workers had
to dig out the pedestal where the statue had stood.

Inside the building, the removal
of ceiling tile left much of the building covered
with insulation and other things that had
accumulated above the ceiling.

MAY/JUNE 2008

Student workers and library staff
moved all of the books from the mezzanine to the
main level to make way for painting and carpeting.
There were no books on these tables or these shelves
before May 2008.

Cataloger Grace Wallace was left
with a tremendous pile of old reference books in her
office as we made way for the exodus of books and
journals from the mezzanine.

Doing its best brachiosaurus
impersonation, this backhoe was able to strip and
knock over all of the trees in our backyard, to make
room for the new addition.

The backhoe in action.

Some trees had deep roots, but
they were no match for the relentless machine.

Only one tree required a chainsaw.

The final tree fell, leaving the
site that was to be the library addition clear and
ready...

...as soon as the remnants were
taken away.

Meanwhile, the shelves were moved
and the carpets were stripped from the mezzanine,
leaving behind a metal floor free of asbestos and
old carpet.
